Grounds For Sculpture | Hamilton, New Jersey

Remember how in my Staycation post I was talking about how many cool things there are to do in New Jersey?  Well, I was able to check one off my list this past weekend when I went to the Grounds For Sculpture

This place is so cool.  It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like:  a ground that houses different sculptures, but there are so many different kinds and scenes.  There are famous paintings that are made into gigantic sculptures, there are original works of art, there are weird things that you don't understand, there are a lot of ladies without clothes on.  And above all, the grounds are just gorgeous!  It is situated right on the water so there are a lot of different water elements they incorporate and there are a bunch of beautiful views.

One of the most fun parts of the grounds is that you have to double-take on pretty much everything.  There's all sorts of statues of people all over the place and you're never sure if they're real or not.  And this place is huge and like a maze.  There's all sorts of secret paths and hidden areas that you can walk right by if you don't pay attention.  There's also a ton of sordid activities going on.  All sorts of men trying to hit on ladies that clearly have no interest in them.  Or, y'know, just ladies sitting around naked while guys sit there fully clothed.  Oh art, sometimes I just don't get you.

There's also a really touching 9/11 exhibit in one of the buildings.  One of the sculptors who has a lot of work on display had a sculpture of a man with a briefcase around ground zero.  On the day of the attacks, his sculpture remained in tact and actually threw a lot of first responders because they thought that it was a man in shock until they went over and realized that it was a sculpture.  It became a makeshift memorial and resonated with a lot of people around the world.  He has two different versions of this sculpture on display:  one that shows what it looked like when the attacks happened and one that shows how it became a memorial.  It was really interesting to see.

They also have displays that change out now and then, just like any art museum would have.  They actually used to have a giant Marilyn Monroe on display but I guess she was just on loan because she wasn't there when we were there, which was kind of a bummer.

If you're ever in the area, or are in the area and looking for a neat place to go, I would definitely recommend this!  It is open all year round and is apparently a great place to search for Pokémon, judging by the charging stations they provide in the lobby.  I just absolutely love when you find the coolest, random places in your state.  My Mom had been here before and we finally were able to nail down a day to go back.  I'm so glad that I did!  If you're interested in seeing more pictures from the Grounds, head on over to my Flickr page!
What are some of the fun, random places you like to go that are by you?  Have you ever been here?  What was your favorite part?
